Narwale bewohnen die Gewässer nördlich des Polarkreises, bis zum Rande der Eisdecke, und werden oft direkt am Packeis angetroffen. Im Sommer wandern sie näher an die Küste Kanadas und Grönlands in kalte, tiefe Fjorde und Buchten. Ihre natürlichen Feinde sind Eisbären, Orcas und manche Haiarten.
