Dave Smalley is an American musician, best known as the lead singer for the hardcore punk bands DYS and Dag Nasty, and skate punk band All as well as lead singer/guitarist with Down by Law. He is known for his influence on pop punk music and his early contributions to the emo genre.
Aleksic left the group at the end of 1970 and the group performed as a trio until April 1971, when former Choir member Dave Smalley (rhythm guitar, vocals), just back from Vietnam, became the fourth member of the original recording lineup with Carmen moving to bass.

Along with Wally Bryson and Dave Smalley their new band – Raspberries - produced a head-on collision with the progressive rock scene and coined the “Power Pop” sound, which featured explosive rock guitars combined with soaring two and four-part pop harmonies. Raspberries played their first show on October 16, 1970.

Down by Law is an American punk rock band formed in 1989 by former All frontman Dave Smalley, who is the only remaining original member. The band has recorded seven studio albums. They stayed on Epitaph Records until 1998 and have since switched to other labels.
Bereits nach wenigen Auftritten entwickelte sich die Gruppe zu einem der beliebtesten Liveacts der Gegend. Nach der Produktion des ersten Demos verließ Aleksic die Band im März 1971 und wurde durch den Rhythmusgitarristen Dave Smalley ersetzt, Carmen wechselte zum Bass.
