Edward D. Easton (1856-1915) was the founder, president and guiding spirit of the company from its incorporation in 1889. Early in his career he had been a stenographer, a respected and well-paid profession in the years before recording technology.

The Columbia Phonograph Company was founded on January 15, 1889, by stenographer, lawyer, and New Jersey native Edward D. Easton (1856–1915) and a group of investors. It derived its name from the District of Columbia , where it was headquartered.
Letztendlich wurde jene am 28. März 1887, mit Unterzeichnung des Vermarktungsvertrages zwischen den Investoren und der Volta Graphophone Company, ins Leben gerufen und am 15. Mai 1887 als legales Unternehmen behördlicherseits anerkannt. Erster Generalmanager wurde Edward D. Easton.
