Ian Astbury wurde in Heswall, Cheshire geboren und wuchs in Kanada auf. Er zeigte schon früh ein großes Interesse für die nordamerikanische Indianerkultur und besuchte mit zwölf Jahren ein Reservat der Mohawk -Indianer.
