Niskayuna is a charming town located in Schenectady County, New York. Nestled in the Capital Region of the state, Niskayuna is renowned for its picturesque landscapes, rich history, and strong sense of community.
History. The name Niskayuna is said to be derived from the Connestigione Indians who occupied the locality at the coming of the Dutch in about 1642, twenty years before Arendt van Curler founded Schenectady. The name, meaning “extensive corn flats,” evolved from the original “Canastagione.”
The Town of Niskayuna was created on March 7, 1809, with an original population of 681. The name of town was derived from early patents to Dutch settlers: Nis-ti-go-wo-ne or Co-nis-tig-i-one, both derived from the Mohawk language.
