The Territory of Washington was an organized incorporated territory of the United States. It was a territory from March 2, 1853, until November 11, 1889. In 1889, it became the State of Washington. It was made from Oregon Territory north of the lower Columbia River and north of the 46th parallel east of the Columbia.
Washington was carved out of the western part of Washington Territory which had been ceded by Britain in 1846 by the Oregon Treaty as settlement of the Oregon Boundary Dispute. It was admitted to the Union as the 42nd state in 1889. The state's population at the 2010 United States Census was 6,724,540.
