East Kilbride is a large suburban town in the South Lanarkshire council area of Scotland. It is Scotland's first new town , and lies on high ground on the south side of the Cathkin Braes, about 8 miles (13 km) southeast of Glasgow city centre.

The area lies on a raised plateau to the south of the Cathkin Braes, about eight miles southeast of Glasgow and close to the boundary with East Renfrewshire.
East Kilbride is a ‘New Town’ in South Lanarkshire and is also one of Scotland’s largest towns. East Kilbride was Scotland's first designated 'New Town', expanded to provide new housing for people moving from nearby Glasgow. The town used to hold a pre-Christian sacred well dedicated to the Celtic goddess Brigid, which gives the town its name.
