The population of the region was 233,034 (2020). The capital in the region is Reykjavík, which is also the national capital.
Höfuðborgarsvæðið har 236 518 innbyggere (2022) og er delt inn i syv kommuner (sveitarfélög): Reykjavík, Kópavogur, Hafnarfjörður, Garðabær, Mosfellsbær, Seltjarnarnes og Kjósarhreppur.
