The city is located in the heart of the former sovereign principality of Béarn, of which it was the capital from 1464.

The Château de Pau (English: Pau Castle, Basque: Paueko gaztelua) is a castle in the centre of the city of Pau, the capital of Pyrénées-Atlantiques and Béarn. It dominates that quarter of the city.
Pyrénées-Atlantiques is part of the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region of Southwestern France. It is bordered by the Landes , Hautes-Pyrénées, Gers departments and the Bay of Biscay . It also borders Spain to the south by the provinces of Huesca , Navarre and Gipuzkoa along a coastline with the Atlantic Ocean to the west.
