The Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins University is a private music and dance conservatory and preparatory school in Baltimore, Maryland. Founded in 1857 and affiliated with Johns Hopkins in 1977, Peabody is the oldest conservatory in the United States and one of the world's most highly-regarded performing arts schools.
George Peabody’s original vision included the creation of four distinct areas of the institute: an academy of music, an art gallery, a library, and a lecture series. The institute operated as such until 1977, when it first affiliated with the Johns Hopkins University, becoming a full division of JHU in 1986.

In 1857, George Peabody founded The Peabody Institute of Music in the heart of the Mount Vernon neighborhood in Baltimore, MD. Although the Institute’s doors did not open until 1866 due to the Civil War, Peabody wrote a letter to the Board of Trustees in February of 1857 stating his intention for the Institute.
