Der Wasserfall ist über den Icefields Parkway (Highway 93) auf befestigten Wegen erreichbar. Er ist insgesamt etwa 18 Meter hoch und rund neun Meter breit. Das Wasser des Sunwapta River stammt vom Athabasca-Gletscher und fällt hier in zwei Stufen hinab. Ein Wanderweg von etwa zwei Kilometern führt zu dem unteren Wasserfall (Lower Falls).
Der Name Sunwapta ist eine Bezeichnung der einheimischen indigenen Urbevölkerung und meint so viel wie Wildes Wasser. Im späten Frühjahr, wenn die Schneeschmelze auf den Gipfeln eingesetzt hat, zeigt der Wasserfall die größten Turbulenzen.
Nach einem kurzen Abstecher vom Icefield Parkway erreicht man den Parkplatz (kostenlos) bei den Sunwapta Falls. Nach wenigen Schritten sind die Wasserfälle erreicht, ein beeindruckends Naturschauspiel. Sie sind den Zwischenstopp wert!

Sunwapta Falls is a pair of waterfalls of the Sunwapta River in Jasper National Park, Alberta, Canada. The falls are accessible via a 600-metre (2,000 ft) access road off the Icefields Parkway, which connects Jasper and Banff National Parks. The falls have a drop of about 18.5 metres (61 feet).
