I would say it depends. Just like herping some people enjoy different aspects of it. Listing, finding rare species, finding the same species (over and over and over again...), seeing a large variety of species, some people enjoy using it as an excuse to get outdoors to see some cool things, and so on.
Pretty sure it's a Lampropeltis. They have pics of juvies found at their site as well.
