Ships in the Firth of Forth once set their maritime clocks by the One o’Clock Gun. The firing of the gun dates back to 1861, when businessman John Hewat brought the idea to Edinburgh from Paris. The gun is still fired every day at 1pm, except on Sundays, Good Friday and Christmas Day.

Die von Birkenhead wurde am Morpeth Dock abgefeuert, um für die Schiffe ein Zeitsignal zu geben. Sie wurde bis 1969 betrieben und seit Oktober 2015 wird wieder eine Kanone in dieser Tradition abgefeuert.

The gun remained in Edinburgh Castle until 1754 when, along with other unused weapons in Scotland, it was taken to the Tower of London. Sir Walter Scott and others campaigned for its return, which was effected in 1829.

21. Aug. 2015 · The Origins of the One O’clock Gun. Many visitors to Edinburgh Castle look forward to seeing one of our highlights. It fires at one o’clock from Mills Mount every day, except Sundays, Good Friday and Christmas Day. It is, of course, the One O’clock Gun.
The One o’Clock Gun & Time Ball Association was founded in 1998 and established a three-month long exhibition at Edinburgh Castle as part of the Millennium celebrations in 2000.
