20. Feb. 2012 · "Bastard" is applied when the person is disliked whatever the reason. "Cheeky bastard" is only for when the person is disliked because of his/her perceived cheek or arrogance. Also, while "bastard" isn't or, at least, wasn't used in a "friendly" way "cheeky bastard can be used benignly, though "cheeky bugger" would be more usual in that case.
