The term 'bum buddies' appears to have been in usage about 10 years earlier and becoming more ubiquitous during the 80's and 90's before being abandoned in the mid 1990's in favor of 'butt buddies'. "Buddy," by comparison, would not help to convey that stern of a tone. It would convey a ligher tone, as if the explanation were of something light-hearted and not something serious. When my dad called me son, he was reminding me that he was my father, that he was in charge. If he called me buddy, the relationship was more balanced.

17. Aug. 2017 · I agree with this. Capitalization is really a style issue, so it will vary by publisher. However, terms of endearment are practically a requirement of the romance genre: sweetheart, darling, beloved, dushka moya, mi corazon, agape mou, habibti, etc. (also some made-up alien terms); they are, in my experience, almost never capitalized by these publishers.
In Australia and New Zealand you'll hear any of the terms luv, mate, cuz, bro, darl, darlin, honey, sweets, cobber, dear, sir, ma'am and even on occasion buddy, you guys, jokers, blokes, sheilas, and so on. It seems to depend on the individual as to when and how these terms are applied.
