  6. Leon “Ndugu” Chancler was born in Shreveport, Louisianna, on July 1, 1952, but soon moved to Los Angeles with his family. He started teaching himself to play drums at age 13, getting advice from older musicians. While in high school he started playing Latin jazz with percussionist Willie Bobo.
