(ドラゴンクエストXII 選ばれし運命の炎 lit. "Dragon Quest XII The Chosen Flame of Destiny"), is the twelfth instalment of the main Dragon Quest series. It is currently in development.
While not much is known about the game, Yuji Horii stated during the 35th anniversary live stream that the turn-based battle system will be changed, but assures that it won't completely disappear. He also stated that the game will be darker than past games, saying it will be mostly aimed for adults. The game will also focus on life choices, with characters making tough decisions that will change their fates.
In April 2023, the image for the game has been changed. According to a Japanese blog, the Dragon Quest series are their main focus for now.
In June 2023, Yuji Horii had a Zoom meeting with fellow workers about the game's development difficulties, such as targeting adult audiences and working remotely thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic. The game is speculated to come out in late 2024 to early 2025 and is currently available for preorder on Playasia.

27. Mai 2021 · The latest mainline entry in the Dragon Quest series was revealed on a livestream to celebrate the series’ 35th anniversary. Not much was revealed beyond the game’s logo and title, but series creator Yuji Horii hinted at some changes to the turn-based battle system.
