The county was formed out of Whitman County in November 1883 and is named after John Adams, the second President of the United States.

Adams County spans 1,925 square miles of southeastern Washington in the semi-arid shrub-steppe region of Washington State, surrounded by neighboring Grant, Lincoln, Whitman, and Franklin Counties. Adams County is where the channeled scablands meet the palouse region. Adams County's two most populous cities are Ritzville and Othello.
