Contents. Anthony Maraschi. The Reverend Anthony Maraschi, S.J. (1820 - 1897) was an Italian -born priest of the Society of Jesus. He was a founder of the University of San Francisco and Saint Ignatius College Preparatory as well as the first pastor of Saint Ignatius Church in San Francisco, California .
SI’s founder, Fr. Anthony Maraschi, SJ, arrived in San Francisco on Nov. 1, 1854, and sought an audience with Archbishop Joseph Alemany, who had earlier welcomed the Jesuits but later found reason to keep Maraschi at arms length.
When Fr. Anthony Maraschi, SJ, opened the doors of the first St. Ignatius Academy on San Francisco’s Market Street, expecting to see a crowd of Catholic boys eager for Jesuit education, only three small faces peered at him on that October day in 1855. As the day progressed, no one else came.
Rev. Anthony Maraschi, a Roman Catholic priest and a member of the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits), founded St. Ignatius Academy in 1855 in a one-room schoolhouse on Market Street (pictured above). In 1862 the second campus rose right next door (the site of the current Westfield Mall and the old Emporium).

1. März 2017 · Three years later Father Anthony Maraschi, born in Piedmont, Italy, arrived in San Francisco after serving in the East. Maraschi laid the groundwork amid sand dunes south of Market Street for St. Ignatius Academy (the present-day University of San Francisco).
