The term centre-back – or centre-half – originates from the development of a back four as the most common defensive shape in football. What had been a line of three full-backs in the widely used W-M structure was converted into a back line of four by a half-back dropping into the defence.
A defender in football is a player, who plays in at the back of the formation. There are many positions classed as a defender, mainly: Left Back; Central Defender; Right back; Sweeper; Full Back; Wing Back; The defenders are the first number when referring to formations, for example: 4-3-3 is the formation.
Central playing positions (central players) – Sweeper, centre back, defensive midfielder, centre midfielder, attacking midfielder and centre forward. Wide playing positions ( wide players ) – Full back, wing back, wing midfielder and wing forward.
