Op 11 oktober 1980 ontstond het CDA uit een fusie van de gereformeerde Anti-Revolutionaire Partij (ARP), de Nederlands-hervormde Christelijk-Historische Unie (CHU) en de Katholieke Volkspartij (KVP).
