The Constitution of Ireland (Irish: Bunreacht na hÉireann, pronounced [ˈbˠʊnˠɾˠəxt̪ˠ n̪ˠə ˈheːɾʲən̪ˠ]) is the fundamental law of Ireland. It asserts the national sovereignty of the Irish people. The enactment of the Constitution of Ireland in 1937 has been described as a "legal revolution". The Irish Free State government was bound by the 1922 Constitution of the Irish Free State. The 1922 Constitution was made subject to the Anglo-Irish Treaty.
Since the constitution entered into force on 29 December 1937, there have been 32 amendments to the constitution. Aside from amendments to the Constitution itself, the Constitution also provides for referendums on ordinary bills ; this is known as an ordinary referendum.
The Irish Constitution was enacted by a popular plebiscite held on 1 July 1937, and came into force on 29 December of the same year. The Constitution is the cornerstone of the Irish legal system and is held to be the source of power exercised by the legislative, judicial and executive branches of government.
