3. Feb. 2023 · During the French Revolution, Louis Philippe II, Duke of Orléans (1747-1793), was the head of the House of Orléans, a cadet branch of the royal Bourbon dynasty. He became a supporter of the Revolution and famously voted for the execution of his cousin, King Louis XVI.
Based at the Palais-Royal, the Duke of Orléans Louis-Philippe II contested the authority of his cousin Louis XVI in the adjacent Louvre. His son would eventually ascend to the throne in 1830 as Louis-Philippe I, King of the French. The descendants of the family are the Orléanist pretenders to the French throne.
Prince Philippe of Orléans, Count of Paris (Louis Philippe Albert; 24 August 1838 – 8 September 1894), was disputedly King of the French from 24 to 26 February 1848 as Louis Philippe II, although he was never officially proclaimed as such. He was the grandson of Louis Philippe I, King of the French.
