Companions of the Order of Canada, the highest level of the Order of Canada, have demonstrated the highest degree of merit to Canada and humanity, on the national or international scene. Up to 15 companions are appointed each year, with a limit of 165 living companions at any given time.

Order of Canada, Canadian honors system founded in July 1967 by Queen Elizabeth II (under the advice of Canadian Prime Minister Lester B. Pearson) on the occasion of the Canadian Confederation’s centennial. The order’s motto is “Desiderantes meliorem patriam,” Latin for “They desire a better country.”
