Salisbury Plain is a chalk plateau in southern England covering 300 square miles (780 km 2). It is part of a system of chalk downlands throughout eastern and southern England formed by the rocks of the Chalk Group and largely lies within the county of Wiltshire , but stretches into Hampshire .
Stonehenge is a prehistoric megalithic structure on Salisbury Plain in Wiltshire, England, two miles (3 km) west of Amesbury. It consists of an outer ring of vertical sarsen standing stones , each around 13 feet (4.0 m) high, seven feet (2.1 m) wide, and weighing around 25 tons, topped by connecting horizontal lintel stones.

Salisbury Plain, one of Great Britain’s best-known open spaces, consisting of a plateaulike area covering about 300 square miles (775 square km), in the county of Wiltshire, England. The largely treeless tract, drained to the south by the River Avon and its tributaries, is developed upon chalk .
The city is approximately 20 miles (30 kilometres) from Southampton and 30 miles (50 kilometres) from Bath . Salisbury is in the southeast of Wiltshire, near the edge of Salisbury Plain. An ancient cathedral was north of the present city at Old Sarum.
