Ab 1995 zog sie sich vorübergehend aus familiären Gründen von der Schauspielerei zurück, nahm aber etwa 2002 ihre Karriere wieder auf. Seitdem hatte sie jeweils fünf Gastauftritte in den Fernsehserien Monk und BrainDead, in denen ihr Ehemann Hauptrollen spielte.
Shalhoub ist seit 1992 mit Schauspielkollegin Brooke Adams verheiratet und hat mit ihr zwei Kinder adoptiert. Sie spielte z. B. in „Mr. Monk im Flugzeug“ die Stewardess.
