The 2021–22 NBL season was the 44th season of the National Basketball League since its establishment in 1979. A total of ten teams contested the 2021–22 season, which commenced on 3 December 2021. Australian broadcast rights to the season are held by ESPN in the first season of a new three-year deal
It is recognised by FIBA as the national body organising international basketball in Australia. Basketball Australia operates the Women's National Basketball League (WNBL) and the Centre of Excellence at the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) in Canberra.
Since its first game in 1979, the NBL has grown from a fledgling competition with crowds of just a few hundred people to a league that attracts over 750,000 spectators a season, as well as prime-time television slots for games to be broadcast both nationally and internationally.
