The Independent Social Democratic Party of Germany ( USPD) was founded in 1917 as a breakaway faction of the SPD. It gathered together opponents of the SPD’s policy of Burgfrieden (truce among parties), demanding a just peace without annexations.
Die SPD ist seit Bestehen sowohl in der Bundesrepublik bis 1990 als auch im wiedervereinigten Deutschland bis mindestens zum Jahr 2020 die mitgliederstärkste Partei gewesen. Sie war von 1966 bis 1982, von 1998 bis 2009 und ist seit 2013 erneut an der Bundesregierung beteiligt.
