23. März 2019 · The U.S. Constitution establishes the office of the President pro tempore of the Senate to preside over the Senate in the Vice President’s absence. Since 1947, the President pro tempore has stood third in line to succeed to the presidency after the Vice President and the Speaker of the House.
The current president pro tempore of the Senate, Democrat Patrick Leahy of Vermont, assumed office on January 20, 2021, during the 117th Congress. Since the office was created in 1789, 91 individuals, from 39 of the 50 states, have served as president pro tempore of the Senate.
