Sketch for a Theory of the Emotions ( French: Esquisse d'une théorie des émotions) is a 1939 book by the philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre. This work contains some of his thoughts about human and emotions. Some of his ideas later appeared in his masterpiece Being and Nothingness .

In the Sketch Sartre identifies three components of every emotional experience: an intentional act, an observable behavior, and a physical change. His task is to convince the reader that they are moments of. an act of consciousness. Emotion is essentially an intentional act because it requires an object to exist (57).
