The three bridges cross the four river channels of the River Ill that flow through Strasbourg's historic Petite France quarter. The Ponts Couverts have been classified as a Monument historique since 1928. Construction of the Ponts Couverts commenced in 1230, and they were opened in 1250.

Les ponts couverts de Strasbourg constituent un ensemble de trois ponts enjambant l'Ill au cœur du quartier de la Petite France. Entre les XIII e et XVIII e siècles, il y avait à cet endroit quatre ponts couverts. Les ponts actuels ne sont plus couverts mais en ont conservé le nom.
The 3 bridges to be seen in the present-day city are clad in sandstone and were built in 1863–1865. Spur-like structures protrude upstream from 2 of the bridges and these were used for placing cannons, which could fire directly along the surface of the river to repel any would-be invaders.
