  4. In 1877 the Ohlsdorf Cemetery was established as a non-denominational and multi-regional burial site outside of Hamburg. The cemetery has an area of 391 hectares (966 acres) with 12 chapels, over 1.5 million burials in more than 280,000 burial sites and streets with a length of 17 km (11 mi).

  5. Photo: SHGL, Iris Groschek, 2021. The ‘German Soldiers’ Graves’ complex is centrally located in the Ohlsdorf Cemetery. It holds 3,500 graves for people who died in World War I, mostly members of the German military, but also some prisoners of war.

  6. Jewish soldiers’ cemetery A burial ground for Jewish soldiers from Hamburg who were killed in World War I lies to the left just before the cemetery exit.
