Chalon-sur-Saône est située à l'est de la France, à environ 55 km au nord de Mâcon 6, 60 km au sud de Dijon 7, 105 km au sud-ouest de Besançon 8, 115 km au nord de Lyon 9 et 300 km au sud-est de Paris 10 à vol d'oiseau. Elle se trouve également à seulement 100 km de la frontière franco-suisse et 120 km de la ville de Genève .

Grafschaft Chalon-sur-Saône. Die Grafschaft Chalon mit dem Hauptort Chalon-sur-Saône bestand von der Mitte des 10. Jahrhunderts bis zum Jahr 1237, als der letzte Graf Chalon (und die Grafschaft Auxonne) gegen die Herrschaft Salins eintauschte; Chalon und Auxonne gingen danach im Herzogtum Burgund auf.
Bei Châtillon-sur-Saône ändert sie ihre Fließrichtung nach Südosten und erreicht bei Jonvelle die Grenze zum Département Haute-Saône. Südlich von Corre trifft die Saône nach etwa 70 km Fließstrecke auf den Nebenfluss Côney und den Canal des Vosges. Ab dessen Einmündung ist die Saône schiffbar und wird Kleine Saône genannt.
