The Jagiellonian University (Polish: Uniwersytet Jagielloński, UJ) is a public research university in Kraków, Poland. Founded in 1364 by King Casimir III the Great, it is the oldest university in Poland and the 13th oldest university in continuous operation in the world. Overview. The Jagiellonian University is the oldest higher education institution in Poland and one of the oldest in Europe. It was founded on 12 May 1364 by the Polish king Casimir the Great. The Jubilee year 2014 marked the 650th anniversary of this remarkable event.
It was founded on 12 May 1364 by the Polish king Casimir the Great. The Studium Generale – as the University was then called – comprised three faculties: of liberal arts, medicine and law. Only the former two were active during the founder's life. After the king's death, the University ceased to exist.
Die Jagiellonen-Universität in Krakau wurde 1364 vom polnischen König Kasimir dem Großen als Studium Generale gegründet. 1817 erfolgte die Umbenennung in den heutigen Namen. Sie ist die älteste slawische, zweitälteste mitteleuropäische und eine der ältesten Universitäten Europas.
