SDF founder Henry Hyndman. The Social Democratic Federation (SDF) was established as Britain's first organised socialist political party by H. M. Hyndman, and had its first meeting on 7 June 1881. Those joining the SDF included William Morris, George Lansbury, James Connolly and Eleanor Marx.

Hyndman wurde als Sohn eines wohlhabenden Geschäftsmannes in London geboren. Nach einer schulischen Ausbildung im eigenen Elternhaus schrieb er sich am Trinity College in Cambridge ein. Nach dem Abschluss im Jahr 1861 studierte er zwei Jahre lang Jura und arbeitete danach als Journalist .
Henry Hyndman argued that only "bona fide" workers' parties could be represented at the congress. The split between the Marxist and possibilist factions had a long history within the Federation of the Socialist Workers of France.
