Die Barentssee, in der Nord-Ost Arktis ist definiert als die Meeresregion zwischen 69°N und 81 °N Breite und 40 °E und 56 °E Länge. Die Barentssee ist ein Randmeer des Atlantischen Ozeans bzw. des Arktischen Ozeans (Nordpolarmeer) nördlich von Norwegen und des europäischen Teils Russlands. Sie wurde nach dem niederländischen Seefahrer Willem Barents benannt.
The Barents Sea contains one of Europe’s last large, clean and relatively undisturbed marine ecosystems. The Barents Sea covers an area of approximately 1.6 million km 2, has an average depth of ca. 230 m, and a maximum depth of about 500 m at the western end of Bear Island Trough.
