The House of Habsburg-Lorraine ( German: Haus Habsburg-Lothringen) originated from the marriage in 1736 of Francis III, Duke of Lorraine and Bar, and Maria Theresa of Austria, later successively Queen of Bohemia, Queen of Hungary, Queen of Croatia and Archduchess of Austria.
Died in Innsbruck on 18 August 1765. Motto: ‘Pro deo et imperio - For God and Empire’. Franz Stephan married Maria Theresa in 1736, thus founding the House of Habsburg-Lorraine. In 1740, following the sudden death of Charles VI, he became co-regent of the Habsburg patrimonial lands.
