Northfield Town History. From 1785 through the 1820s, largely Yankees from Connecticut, Massachusetts, and the older Vermont towns settled Northfield. Next to arrive were the Irish, attracted in the 1840’s by jobs on the railroad. The Welsh arrived after the Irish to work in the slate quarries in the 1850’s and 1860’s.
The Town of Northfield, Vermont was chartered in 1781 and consists of 38.3 square miles. Northfield also is home to six covered bridges, four of which are located in Northfield Falls in the northern part of town. This includes the Slaughterhouse Road Bridge, which is off of Vermont Route 12.
Northfield is the central village and a census-designated place (CDP) in the town of Northfield, Washington County, Vermont, United States. As of the 2020 census, it had a population of 3,757, out of 5,918 in the entire town.
