Das Land Waldeck entstand im Mittelalter um die Burg Waldeck an der Eder im Nordwesten des heutigen Landes Hessen als selbständige Grafschaft des Heiligen Römischen Reiches. 1712 wurde es zum Fürstentum mit der Residenzstadt Arolsen, das zudem von 1848 bis 1921 staatsrechtlich mit der Grafschaft Pyrmont zu Waldeck-Pyrmont vereinigt war.
