Walter Morey (February 3, 1907 – January 12, 1992), was a writer of numerous works of children's fiction, set in the U.S. Pacific Northwest and Alaska, the places where Morey lived for all of his life. His book Gentle Ben was the basis for the 1967 movie Gentle Giant and the 1967-1969 television show Gentle Ben. [2]

While living in Great Falls, Montana, Walt was given a book entitled Chip of the Flying U, a story in a series of novels by B. M. Bower, the first successful female western-story writer. The book was illustrated by (and reportedly based in part on the early life of) western artist and sculptor Charles Russell, who lived near the Morey family.
Gentle Ben is a bear character created by author Walt Morey and first introduced in a 1965 children's novel, Gentle Ben. [1] [2] The original novel told the story of the friendship between a large male bear named Ben and a boy named Mark.
Walt Morey had a prolific writing and speaking career throughout the Pacific Northwest in the 1960’s-1990’s. Yet, only two of his books remain in print , and his name is not well known anymore. As a family, we have always talked about Walt’s work and how it should still be reaching readers just as it did for more than forty years.
