Antoine Schnapper, né le 10 juillet 1933 et mort le 29 août 2004, est un historien de l'art et un universitaire français. Spécialiste de la peinture française du XVII e au XIX e siècle, il est professeur à l' université de Dijon (1973-1978) puis à l' université Paris-IV à partir de 1978.

Antoine Schnapper (10 July 1933 – 29 August 2004) was a French art historian on art of the 17th and the 18th century. A student of André Chastel, he organised many retrospectives on artists of that period, notably one at the Louvre in 1989 on Jacques-Louis David to commemorate the bicentenary of the French Revolution.

Dieser soll ein Gemälde zur Erinnerung an den Sieg von Marengo gewünscht haben. Antoine Schnapper hält es für wahrscheinlicher, dass der spanische König Karl IV. das Gemälde vorgeschlagen hatte. Alexander Sturgis und Hollis Clayson nennen den König ausdrücklich als Auftraggeber.

Overview. Sorbonne professor; scholar of the history of collecting in France and expert on Jacques-Louis David. He studied art history at the Sorbonne under André Chastel. He married the sociologist Dominique Aron (b. 1934) in 1958. After receiving his degree in 1959-1960, he accepted a position at the University of Bologna in 1961.
