Ab 1927 war er Studiomusiker, u. a. bei Roger Wolfe Kahn und Sam Lanin, und spielte kaum noch Jazz, sondern gehörte den Tanzbands von Cass Hagan, Don Voorhees und Ross Gorman an. Er war aber von 1938 bis 1943 in der Band von Paul Whiteman und 1943 in der von Benny Goodman.
When Jack Teagarden arrived in New York in 1928, he replaced Mole as the role model for trombonists, with a more legato, blues-oriented approach. Having started working for radio in 1927 (at WOR), Mole changed his focus to working with NBC (1929–1938).

Mole and Red Nichols were the leaders of a group called “Miff Mole’s Little Molers” in 1926-9. They recorded often until 1930. Jack Teagarden, who arrived in New York in 1928 as a trombonist, quickly replaced Mole. He had a more blues-oriented, legato approach and was soon regarded as the role model for trombonists.
