Freeman war 1933 der Hauptsolist bei den Aufnahme von Eddie Condons „The Eel“. 1936 spielte er bei Tommy Dorsey und 1938 im Orchester von Benny Goodman, welches er aber nach einem Jahr wieder verließ. 1939–1940 leitete er das kurzlebige Summa Cum Laude Orchestra mit Max Kaminsky, Pee Wee Russell und Eddie Condon.
One of his most notable performances was a solo on Eddie Condon's 1933 recording, The Eel, which became Freeman's nickname for his long snake-like improvisations. Freeman played with Tommy Dorsey's Orchestra (1936–1938) and Benny Goodman's band in 1938, before forming the Summa Cum Laude Orchestra (1939–1940).

Freeman led a U.S. Army dance band based in the Aleutian Islands during World War II , then lived in New York and Chile.
