Smiley Lewis – I Hear You Knocking. Lewis’ größter Erfolg kam erst im Juli 1955 auf den Markt, als I Hear You Knocking (mit Huey „Piano“ Smith auf dem Piano) bis zur # 2 der R&B-Charts vordrang. Lewis had his first national hit song with "The Bells Are Ringing" in 1952. He was the first to record Bartholomew's song "Blue Monday", in 1954; Fats Domino 's recording of the song was a hit two years later.

His first recordings were for DeLuxe in 1947, but he then moved to Imperial for which company he recorded 1950-1961, usually backed by Dave Bartholomew's band.
By 1947, his following was strong enough to merit a session for DeLuxe Records, which issued his debut 78, “Here Comes Smiley.” Then Lewis signed with Imperial in 1950, debuting with Tee-Nah-Nah and things began to move.
