Johnson recorded often in the 1940s and spent much of 1947-1949 based in Los Angeles. He moved to Buffalo in 1950 and, other than an appearance at the 1958 Newport Jazz Festival, he was in obscurity for much of the decade. A stroke later in 1958 left him partly paralyzed.

He moved to Buffalo, New York in 1950. Despite his declining health, he continued to tour and record, including with Jimmy Rushing, Turner and Jazz at The Philharmonic. In 1958, he was partially paralysed after a stroke. His final years were characterized by poverty and illness.
In 1949, he also wrote and recorded "Rocket 88 Boogie," a two-sided instrumental, which influenced the 1951 Ike Turner hit, "Rocket 88". On three dates in January 1946, Johnson recorded an early concept album, House Rent Party .
