Bey has a wide vocal range, with a four- octave baritone voice. Raised in Newark, New Jersey, [1] Bey attended Newark Arts High School.

Andy Bey kam schon früh mit dem Jazz in Berührung; so hatte er schon mit acht Jahren einen Auftritt mit dem Saxophonistem Hank Mobley.Bey war erst dreizehn Jahre alt, als 1952 sein erstes Soloalbum erschien, Mama's Little Boy's Got the Blues; mit 17 gründete er mit seinen Schwestern Salome und Geraldine Bey ein Trio namens Andy and The Bey Sisters.
