is an NBC Christmas special, executive produced by Joe Ruby and Ken Spears, that premiered on December 13, 1987. The story is about a world-class mystery-writing mouse who spends Christmas Eve with his sleuthing partners tracking down a missing Santa Claus. It combines live-action footage with an animated character, Alex the mouse.
A little boy is at a department store hoping to meet Santa Claus. Instead he sees a sign saying Santa is out. Disappointed, he goes outdoors, only to see Santa on the park bench. The boy approaches Santa, who asks him what he wants. The boy identifies himself as Stevie and says his father is deployed overseas and cannot afford a ticket home. Santa explains that sometimes families have to make sacrifices like that at Christmas and cannot promise what the boy asked for, he then trails off to say "How can someone you were so close to betray you like that?" The boy asks what that means, to which Santa regains his character and says that was not his fault. Santa offers to cheer Stevie up by buying him lunch at a nearby hot dog stand. Suddenly, a van pulls up and a man grabs Santa inside.
Jill is looking over a manuscript, which she admits a cartoon mouse named Alex ghostwrites for her. Alex allows her to take the credit as no one believes a cartoon mouse would write, let alone exist. The only other one to know about Alex is Jill's friend Amy. Jill's mother tells her daughter a young man wishes to see her, causing Amy to respond "Oh, you mean a hunk?!" Jill's mother chuckles and says not quite, it is Stevie Mumford, the son of Mrs. Mumford, their housekeeper. She escorts Stevie in, who sought out Jill due to her mystery novels and says "Santa has been kidnapped!"
