27. März 2019 · Even as Deskey was designing the Topside Gallery, Aldrich Rockefeller was working with Lillie P. Bliss and Mary Quinn Sullivan to develop what would become the Museum of Modern Art. The Topside Gallery was lost in 1938 when the Rockefellers’ townhouse was demolished to make room for MoMA’s first permanent building, opened the following year.
She was not an expert on modern art, but she was a close friend of Abby Aldrich Rockefeller and held a legendary weekly cultural salon at her apartment. She was also the main benefactor of New York's Dalton School and deeply interested in experimental education. She chaired the Museum's first membership committee and was chairman of the education committee in the early 1930s.
