In the 1920s, a young woman comes to the Canadian prairies as a schoolteacher and enters the lives of a dsyfunctional farming family, ruled over by a controlling and cruel patriarch. Caleb Gare is the wealthiest farmer in the district who is obsessed with acquiring land.
A visitor challenges a wealthy and domineering farmer (Sam Shepard) who allows his wife (Alberta Watson) and children to live in poverty.
