  5. Biography. In May 1973, at the San Jose Invitational, Al Feuerbach broke the shot put world record with a toss of 21.82 (71-7). Feuerbach represented the US at the 1972-76 Olympics, made the 1980 Olympic team, and competed twice at the Pan American Games in the shot put, winning the gold medal in 1971 and finishing fourth in 1979.
